Ed Scaturro and his 22.18 pound bag for 3 bass

Ed Scaturro and his 22.18 pound bag for 3 bass

Today we meet the co-angler who holds the record for the most weight with a 3 fish limit on the American Bass Anglers Weekend Series Tournament, from Orlando, FL, Ed Scaturro. Let’s see what Ed has to tell co-anglers.com about his recent win on Lake Okeechobee this past February. He’ll also tell us about his record.

Co-Anglers.com:What is you Home town?

Ed ScaturroEd Scaturro: I am originally from Hillsborough, NJ but I moved to Winter Park, FL when I was 14. Lived in central Florida ever since.

CA: What is your favorite lure?

ES: My favorite lure used to be the Zoom mag and regular size speed worm but lately the Gambler Fat Ace is my go to bait. This bait cashed me a couple of checks lately. Gambler if your listening love to be sponsored lol

CA: What is your favorite rod and reel combination?

ES: The combo I really like right now is my Shimano Casitas on a Shimano Clarus Med Heavy 6’6″ with the new Trik-Fish 15lbs Flippin & Pitching Fluorocarbon. Very smooth and responsive.

CA: What tournament trail do you fish?

ES: I started fishing tournaments as a co-angler back in 2008 on the FLW BFL. Then after a couple of year started fishing both ABA open series and the BFL. Now I just fish the ABA. Billy Benedetti does an awesome job! If have not fished the ABA lately you should. Pay out is awesome.

CA: How long have you been a co-angler?

ES: I have been fishing as a co-angler for about 9 years wow been awhile never realized that its been that long because I love it.

Ed ScaturroCA: What lake do you like best and why? Best tournament finish? Which lake and year?

ES: My favorite lake by far…… Drum roll please ….. OKEECHOBEE. It suits my style of fishing to a “T”. Its doesn’t hurt that I won twice on there. By the way its the only wins I have also lol.

CA: What or who inspires you to fish?

ES: What inspires me to fish tournaments is the competition. I love it. A chance to prove your skills and get payed. Hopefully. Also the fishing community, good people.

Funny thing was the next question that Ed answered for us. Co-anglers often do not have the chance to get time in the water unless a friend or someone in the sport that is humble, really humble, takes one of us out to pre-fish for any tournament. So we ask ourselves one key question when it comes to our boaters and I think Ed has summed it up for us.

Ed ScaturroCA: What do you expect from tournament fishing?

ES: What I expect from tournament fishing is as a co-angler hoping your boater did his homework. Nothing worse is when your boater says at the pre-meeting “do you know the lake and do have any spots I haven’t fished this lake yet.” Lol . I really just hope to have a chance at fish and good company. You can never have to many friends. Hopefully learn something new also.

CA: Who is one person you would like to fish with but haven’t had the opportunity to fish with yet?

ES: I would love to fish with any elite pro but would toss them aside to fish with Luiza Barros. If you don’t know her just Google.

Side note: I not know who Luiza Barros was so I took Ed’s challenge to get to know this new name in the sport. Who would not like to fish with a young gorgeous Brazilian angler. But did you know that she is an avid angler and is part of the CCA (Coastal Conservation Association). She has also been featured in many outdoors and fishing magazines. It’s good when you are challenged, get to know new people and what they are doing for our fisheries.

CA: Do you have a fishing goal? If so, what is it?

ES: My top goal in fishing these tournaments is to win a bass boat. That would be a dream. A life changer for me.

Ed ScaturroCA: Tell us about your record catch for the ABA (American Bass Anglers).

ES: Well about the record it goes like this… I met the boater after the meeting at Scott Driver park. He goes hey come with me I don’t want anyone to hear. I go, ok. He tells me he’s on BIG fish. I go great (heard that before). So the next day we go out fishing it’s overcast with light rain. He catches a fish on his second cast. A 1.5lb and throws it right back. Thats small there bigger ones here. I then catch a 13″ fish and put the culling bob on and throw it in the live well. He laughs at me and says you don’t need that I’m on big fish. Then a little later a couples of times I hear him say man another 5lb fish followed all the way to the boat. I then stopped my bait halfway back and l started to get bites. 3 pounders then a 5 pounder. A little later a 7 pounder by 10am. Then a caught another 7 pounder. It was a great day I was catching 3 and 4 pound fish all morning, over 10. Now its around 2:30pm close to weight in and he wanted to try another spot. I said great. When we got there a see a clump of reeds and tossed a mag speed worm and caught another 7 pounder to end the day. I culled a 5lb bass. I never did that before. We had another 45 min but I put my poles away. The name of the boater is now my friend for life. Thank you again Ron Yentz for the bag of a lifetime 22.18 for 3 bass.

For me, I can say that hearing Ed tell us his story today and how he has spoken about his triumphs that it is not only about the great tournament that we have had, not only about the biggest catch that we have caught and not even about the wins. It is more about the friendships we get to make and more about a partnership that can be created.

Well ’till next time my friends and fish on tight lines.
